chalk [I heart faces]

When I first discovered this week's theme over at is chalk, I wanted to do a cutesy little people-with-chalk-thought-bubbles shot. My mother quickly reminded me that I could do so much better and stand out from the crowd with a shot from the Lake Worth street painting festival. I used another shot from this event for the "hands on" theme and had a gallery published through FAU's University Press.

It still amazes me how such wonderful masterpieces can be created from nothing more than chalk and pastels.

I chose this shot because, while it isn't my favorite from the day and certainly isn't perfectly lit, it really demonstrates the emotional pull that art can have.

Lake Worth street painting festival

Please bear with me as I am still exhausted from Sunday but I promised I'd get these photos up. I tried my best not to pick any that overlapped with the ones in the gallery but I had a few favorites I wanted to properly post-process.

I absolutely love this one. Between her hat and the colors used in her flamingo, it just screams South Florida to me.

This artist was really nice and genuinely wanted to talk to people about her piece.

She asked me if I could send her a photo of her artwork. And while we were talking, I caught her laughing and it was just too perfect.

I loved watching the artists work and since everyone was photographing them anyway, they pretty much ignored me and allowed me to capture them hard at work.

"hands-on" fun [I heart faces]

This week's theme on could not be more perfect. Yesterday, I covered the Lake Worth Street Art Festival for University Press.

Last night, I stayed up until 2am getting photos in for the gallery on the University Press site. Luckily for me, many of my favorites did not have enough information to be captioned and posted so you'll get to see those tomorrow, once I'm rested enough to put together a coherent post.

"breathe in, breathe out/'cause this is life, you are living it right now"

Last night was the Beau Bristow show and he was absolutely amazing. I've been writing and rewriting this entry and nothing I say seems to convey just how much his music impacted me. I guess the best explanation is that I needed to hear some of the things he says in his songs.

I know these photos aren't technically perfect. They're far from it. Too much grain, too much motion blur, not sharp enough... But rather than focusing on what's wrong, I'd like for you to listen to his music and tell me that you don't feel something when you look at the photos.

...we interrupt the regularly scheduled content...

I'm still going through the Ohio photos but I could not resist bringing a little color and flair to you.

Program Board has an coffeehouse music series every spring called Java and Jams in Jupiter which I'm hopefully going to cover for University Press. I covered the 'preview' show in November and had an amazing time with Tad Dreis (who got his own post here) so I knew I could not miss last night's show.

The first show of the season was Abi Cook. I can only hope the other musicians live up to the standard she set. She is soulful, quirky, and a huge sweetheart. When Austin and I spoke to her before the show, she was actually interested in my photography. And her only request was that I post the photos on Facebook and tag her in them so she could see them. I wish more musicians were that nice about my camera. In exchange, I tried not to blind her too much with my rediculous flash of doom (which I am still getting used to).

I wish photos could convey her presence. She just sings from the heart and the entire room feels warmer and more inviting.

Now, let's just hope that retroactively telling UP that Austin and I covered the show works out.

homecoming? I'm already home

Please forgive the rediculous title. I'm running on very little sleep in an attempt to be productive and the first thing to go is the filter that stops me from making terrible jokes.

Sunday night, homecoming week officially kicked off with a 'decorate the Burrow' event.

I feel that these photos are pretty much self-explanatory.

Monday night (can I still say 'tonight' if I haven't slept yet?) was the homecoming carnival and it was fan-freaking-tastic. That isn't even a word but I'm so excited, I'm going to use it anyway.

Highlights include (from left to right):
-the swing ride
-Owlsley, our beloved burrowing owl mascot
-pieing our peers for donations to Invisible Children
-Candice's excited dancing (which I have to draw attention to, since I used it in the collage)
and, of course, the glider ride that made me really dizzy. But it looks so pretty all lit up.

Even though it looks like I was working hard the entire time, I promise I chose to have a little fun too. In between taking photos and collecting info for my captions (which I'll write once I've slept and can form a coherent sentence again), I managed to ride the rides.
retro love
I'm pretty sure the entire day can be summed up by this photo. I have my camera in my arms, my boy next to me, and I'm flying! I must be home.

new beginnings and ice cream!

I swear, the title just came to me. I'm totally not playing on the significance of the event or anything.

Yesterday (*gasp* a timely entry? no way!) was the farewell to President Brogan ice cream social and hopefully... my first day as the Jupiter photo correspondent for University Press! Need I say more?

In the photo on the left, you can see a somewhat overexposed Austin. He is the words to my pictures (no really, he's the campus writer) and apparently washes out easily under harsh flash.

Mostly unrelated but sort of under the new beginnings umbrella, I am now addicted to Sonic and intend to make Doug and Javi take me all the time.

What? Did you think this photo came with real news?
